Article from Teaching Music Magazine: New Arts Focus Revives Massachusetts School

Although this article is only one page, it is packed with incredible facts and information.  The Orchard Gardens K-8 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, had been ranked as one of the lowest in the state.  It was often compared to a prison and was known for its below average test scores.  The principal, Andrew Bott, made a bold move when he decided to cut back on school security and invest in the arts program.  He said that the arts fundamentally altered these disadvantaged kids and changed their perspective on life.  It was noted that the halls in the school became filled with drawings and awards, and test scores showed signs of improvement.  NAfME’s Assistant Executive Director for Advocacy and and Public Affairs, Chris Woodside, commented on this situation, “Here is a principal who viewed the arts as an investment and now they are seeing the dividends.” He also discussed that music should be taught by a certified teacher like other core classes.  Music is a powerful tool that must not be overlooked.  It is vital to the success of students, and it is imperative that we continue to advocate for it in the school systems.
